Well, I'm backdating this a little so it's not a week late :-) But he's still two months old!
Let's see, our little man is just as healthy as he can be! At his appointment, he was 12 lbs 2 ounces, 23 3/4 inches long and had a 15.25 inch head. If memory serves me correctly, he's smaller than Madeline was at this age. Yes, he is...but only by a little. She was 12 lbs 3 ounces, 24 1/2 inches long and had a 16 inch head. Percentiles for a boy are different and I know he's smaller. If Gabe is anything like Madeline, he'll start to taper off in weight but continue with the crazy lengths (although I don't think he's in the 90s percentiles in length like Madeline always has been).
Anyway, he got his first round of immunizations and hated every minute of it. Madeline would cry, but when it was over she was oblivious to the fact she had just been stuck. Gabe? Not so much. It upset him tremendously and he was a different baby when I took him home after his appointment. He was feverish and basically slept the entire day. I was getting worried so I called the pediatrician. He's fine, and by evening, he had finally woken up for an hour or so. At least I know that I can probably get a lot done on the days he has his shot appointments because he'll be so lethargic.
So, what's new with our two month old? Well, between the first and second month, Gabe has:
- Perfected his tummy to back roll. Tummy time does not exist around here because he flips himself over like he's been doing it since he was two weeks old. Oh wait, he HAS been doing it since he was two weeks old. His pediatrician even commented on how strong he is. Yup, that's my boy!
- He loves sucking on his hands. He has found both of them and discovered they are good for gnawing and sucking, thus he is a slobber fest, too. Between that and his spitting up, I'm grateful I have a ton of big burp cloths.
- He loves his reflection. Madeline didn't discover her reflection until much older, but maybe he's discovered it because his changing table is on our bathroom counter. He doesn't have a bedroom and he's sleeping next to me still (and once he's graduated to the crib, he'll be in our closet). Space is tight and we've been creative, thus the changing table on our counter in front of the giant mirror. He's in love with his reflection and Craig comments he inherited this trait from his Aunt Katie :-)
- He also LOVES the bouncy seat. Madeline liked it, but didn't notice the cartoony animals dangling from overhead until she was much older. Gabe, however, is enchanted by the large faces and bats at them already.
- He is also sleeping great! He is down for the night, most nights, at around 8:30. I'd prefer it to be 7-7:30, but I honestly don't know how I'd manage that with Madeline's bath time and evening routine. So, he goes down at around 8:30 (his choosing, not mine. See above.) and will typically wake up once in the night. It varies and is somewhere between 1:30 - 6 AM. You read that right. Baby boy has slept from 8:30 - 6 AM a couple of times. There are times when he wakes in the middle of the night and will barely nurse he's so tired and out of it. I give him a little and put him back to sleep because I'm not going to force him to nurse if he wants to sleep - I want to sleep too! ha! If he wakes earlier, say around 1:30 AM, he may wake up another time before he's up for the day. All in all, I am NOT complaining!
- But speaking of sleep, he's been sleeping in his swing since about a week after we brought him home. I bought the fancy "Within Arm's Reach" bassinet and he's barely broken it in. He doesn't swing, but it helped with his incredible gas issues early on and is helping him with congestion issues now. I'm concerned about the transition to sleeping flat, but for now, I'm enjoying his long stretches at night.
- The 3 month onesies are about to go into retirement...
- Gabe is pretty laid back. Madeline is - and always has been - more of a passionate child. Maybe it's because he's the second child or maybe it is just his personality. I don't know, but he's pretty cool with whatever until he gets hungry or is tired.
- Lastly, he has smiled. I think this is probably my favorite of all the firsts a baby learns. There is just something about a baby smiling back at you for the first time. As a parent, and especially a mother, you give and give and give...and there's no greater reward than those first smiles.
I'm seeing a pattern here...he's not like his big sister. Surprise, surprise. Babies are different! I can't get into the comparison game because a parent should never compare their children. Unfortunately, it comes naturally to do so. "Oh, he rolled over before Madeline!" , "She weighed more!" , "He's sleeping soooo much better than she did!" and on and on and on...bottom line is that I'm really enjoying all the firsts again. Gabe is learning new things and it is revolutionary to such a young baby! As a mom, I'm thrilled to see him grow, thrive and respond to his environment. I still think of Gabe's age in two terms: (1) his actual age and (2) the weeks he's been home. I know there will come a day when I'll think of him in just his age, but when he's 8 weeks old and has only been home for 6 1/2 of those weeks, I can't help but think of both. He was very sick and as I see him act normally, grow and respond to us, I am so thankful.
I'll add his two month images when I have the camera upstairs with me. I need to get busy while both kids sleep!
