I couldn't resist purchasing this the other day while at the grocery store:
It was on sale for $5. Living in Georgia makes for some expensive Blue Bell, but it's so worth it. I've finally converted Craig and he agrees that Blue Bell is the way to go. But at $7 a half gallon, I usually pass and get whatever is on sale. But not the other day, I picked up a flavor I'd never tried and one that I thought Craig would enjoy. We are in different camps when it comes to ice cream.
I couldn't resist because as I walked past the ice cream, I thought of someone special in my life. This little half gallon reminds me of my Papa.
One of my fondest memories of him was when he'd waltz through our back door, completely uninvited and as a surprise to my parents, with two half gallons of Blue Bell. He would proudly proclaim that they were on sale two for five dollars. My mom wasn't too happy to have so much ice cream in the house, but it was a little kid's dream come true - ice cream. And lots of it! We would pull out bowls and spoons and eat way too much of the creamy goodness. My papa would stay and chat with us, I don't remember about what. But I remember the ice cream - it was always Blue Bell.
To be honest, I'm not convinced the ice cream was always on sale when he'd surprise us with a midday dessert. I now look back at those memories and think it was an excuse for him to come visit. He wanted to see his grandchildren. At one point, he may have seen it on sale and thought it would be a good
treat to share with us, but after he saw the initial reaction, he may
have just brought over the ice cream. And yes, he may have been slightly bribing us with Blue Bell, but it has created a fond memory for me. Blue Bell holds a taste of good memories of my Papa. And man, it still tastes good!
And maybe when I have grandchildren of my own, I'll swing by the store and pick up some Blue Bell to surprise my family with...just to be able to spend some time with them.
So Papa, this bowl of Blue Bell is for you!
