Craig and I went out to eat the other night and for the sake of time, it was either fast food or BBQ.
An easy choice if I was in
Texas…we actually decided to try the BBQ.
Bad choice.
First, the menu options for the “BBQ” was pulled pork or beef (not brisket). When our order arrived it looked somewhat appealing, that was until we both took a bite. I don’t know what Georgia thinks they were serving, but it certainly wasn’t BBQ.
First, the beef, was greasy. I believe they cooked it by frying and then adding liquid smoke or something to give it a smoked flavor. Mind you, liquid smoke is some pretty darn tasty stuff, but not when it’s combined with grease.
Second, the sauce. I should not even be called BBQ sauce. It’s defamation to the name of BBQ. The menu should indicate that their “BBQ” is served with red vinegar. I love me some malt vinegar on fish, but in my BBQ sauce??? It was basically ketchup stewed with onions and vinegar. Yuck.
Third, both Craig and I were parched after digesting the sodium-laden food. Usually, BBQ is nice and lean and smoky and since the smoke is what adds all the wonderful flavor, sodium content isn’t through the roof.
I’ve tried a few BBQ places in Georgia and I give up. There just no place like home.

I guess I shouldn't mention that I had BBQ on Monday then... Get your fill this weekend!
yeah, you had what i refer to as "north carolina" BBQ. i don't know what happened between alabama and the rest of the east coast, but it involved vinegar and the addition of general nastiness. the first time i tried this type of "BBQ" i had the same reaction you did-- this is NOT the real thing. but for part of the country, it is! i feel bad for them.
aw... the barbecue in Alabama is relatively edible - minus the sauce! it's ketchup with molasses and vinegar added, and not in a good way! I really miss Carl's BBQ on 290. Nothing up here is even that good.
