Wow. I've been a blogging slacker the past week and a half! Since I feel the need to update this blog semi-frequently, I'll post about something that happened almost right after we moved into the bigger apartment.
When we moved in, Craig noticed a hole in under the kitchen sink, and since Hutch is known to hide in any available cabinet, we placed boxes in front of those cabinets, until we got around to purchasing kiddie locks, so he could not get stuck in the walls. It wasn't a big deal and neither one of us really cared about the hole, until this night. Craig and I were winding down to go to bed when he noticed the cats perched in front of the kitchen sink, starring at the cabinets. They were both incredibly intense.
The cats had noticed a rodent and wanted to get at it. I wasn't thrilled about it, and thought it was a mouse, but the sounds that were coming from the cabinet seemed too loud for a lone mouse. Craig and I assumed it was a rat. I didn't want to see my cats face a rat, so we kept the door shut and I was to call maintenance the next morning. Craig went and got his "beat down" stick (an axe handle without the axe that he keeps by our bed...just in case *snicker*) and started to hit the cabinet door. The darn rodent started hitting back and scratching and making a ton of noise. The cats were more focused than I have ever seen them. Every time Craig hit the door, the trapped rodent would swipe and scratch back. We were both convinced that there was no way we were opening the cabinet door now!
Soon, the rodent made its way back down the hole and we went to sleep.
The next morning, I called our office and told them the situation. The apartment manager informed me that there has been a raccoon problem in/near our particular part of the complex! I would have never assumed a raccoon would have ventured up the walls, but with all the fighting back going on inside the cabinet, it's surely not out of the question. We sure are glad that we didn't open the door now...who knows what would have happened to my cats!
The hole is now fixed and we are rodent free.
