My college friend, Erin, came to Atlanta to help me unpack and get a little organized today. It was wonderful to see her and meet her little one, Elsie. I was shocked to see her tiny baby so alert practically all day long. She was in and out of slumber, but never really napped. Erin has her worked cut out...day in and day out, her baby doesn't nap. Wow.
So, here's what I am not sure about.
My cats hissed at Erin and Elsie. Hissed. One of the cats doesn't hide from company - ever. The other takes about five minutes to warm up to company and then is fine. This was strange behavior for them. I also noticed they would not venture in the same room as Elsie. Maybe Starsky and Hutch smelled Erin's two male cats, and that could be part of it, but I am slightly concerned that the cats are going to not take to our baby. The cats avoided the baby's room, where we spent most of our time, and didn't even go in there after the Elsie left. The cats are always trying to get in that room, since I leave it shut, and they are naturally curious and want to be where they are not allowed.
Changing gears now...I had no idea I'd get so many responses to the name game post! I'll keep you posted on our names. I know we must name her at one point!

Eh, they'll adjust. Sure they might hiss but they'll get over it. Cats can be such snooty little creatures!
I know it's easier said than done, but I wouldn't worry about it. It'll be your baby, not a stranger and a strange baby, and over time they'll adjust.
Anthony's two cats (brother and sister) slept together, groomed each other, and were raised together from kittenhood, but when we moved into our apartment they fought and hissed at each other for several days before settling down.
Just wait and see, and give it time when the time comes. It'll all be fine, I'm sure!
You know, I think Elsie may have just been overstimulated yesterday because she went 6 hours between nursings last night (5 hours of that she was asleep) and she's asleep now, in the middle of the day. Whatever. :) I think the lesson learned here is that a 7-week old baby doesn't have very dependable patterns, except for the sleeping at night thing (most of the time).
And Vicky was right, your baby will smell and be familiar to Starsky and Hutch, after the initial get-to-know-you phase. Don't worry. :)
