A year ago today, at 6:52 a.m., Madeline made me a mother. What an incredible year it has been, too. There were days that literally stood still they were so difficult, days that never seemed to end and days where I didn't know what I was doing. But then I would blink and a month had passed. Then two. Then twelve. Yes, the days are long but the weeks, months, and now years, are short.
Instead of writing what Madeline likes/is up to lately, I want to take the time to reflect on what I've learned in the past year through becoming a mother.
Learning basic skills are all of a sudden a thrill again - sitting up, crawling, walking, eating and clapping are exciting when done for the first time.
Babies change so fast...especially the first year.
A clean house isn't that important...
And time with family is.
Changing a diaper can be a dangerous and messy task.
Talking about poop and other bodily functions can be a daily occurrence.
Clothes are optional (for her, not me) and it's usually more fun when the option isn't there.
Baby bellies, bottoms and cheeks are the cutest things.
Clipping baby nails is a nerve-wracking task that I dread.
Babies only cooperate so many times when getting their temperature taken rectally.
If you continue to offer a baby broccoli, they will more than likely start to eat it (she did!)
I've learned that a hug truly is the best gift.
I've learned that I can survive on much less sleep than I ever thought.
Each day truly is an incredible blessing - even the days that are completely normal and the days that are truly difficult.
There's so much more I've learned, but being a mother has temporarily made my brain forget.
But can you believe that she went from this...
...to this in a year?
